CAISES Community Oriented Primary Care Clinic

PACE MD’s MED-Spanish First/Second-Year Medical Student (MS1/2) Summer Elective program is ideal for students seeking to develop the vital language skills and cultural literacy necessary for success in the multicultural healthcare field. Designed for students during the summer between their first and second years of medical school, the four-week program combines individualized Spanish language instruction with opportunities to shadow physicians in a variety of medical settings. Additionally, students are invited to complete certification courses, participate in health and wellness brigades organized by the Health Ministry and train locals in basic life support and CPR where appropriate. Students will come face-to-face with the realities of global health while developing invaluable intercultural skills.

    • Session 1: May 29, 2020 to June 27, 2020

    • Session 2: July 3, 2020 to August 1, 2020

  • Application deadline

    • Session 1: April 1

  • Program cost: $2,750 (one-on-one Spanish instruction add $200 USD fee)

SPANISH INSTRUCTION

  • Group size: individualized instruction with one to three students per instructor.

  • Hours: 2 hours per day

  • Levels: Beginner and Intermediate (for 1-on-1 instruction add $200 USD)

CLINICAL EXPERIENCE

Clinical experiences* are meant to provide participants with greater knowledge of the Mexican health care system and opportunities to practice Spanish in a clinical setting.

*IMPORTANT NOTICE: Placements are contingent upon Availability, the participant’s Spanish-speaking level, Academic degree, Professional experience and Program duration. All deployments are subject to the discretion of MED-Spanish and its medical director. Practitioners licensed in the US are reminded that they are not legally permitted to practice medicine in Mexico. 

  • Hours: 3 to 5 hours/day

  • Available placements: Ambulatory Care, Mobile Health Unit, Out-Patient Clinic.

Elective Credit

Participants seeking elective credit from their medical/profession school for the MedSpanish program are required to obtain pre-approval from their program director, dean of students or corresponding authority prior to the program. All necessary paperwork and/or requirements must be shared with MED-Spanish in a timely manner to assure accommodations can be made. PACE MD’s MED-Spanish is NOT RESPONSIBLE if participants are denied elective credit for the program.
